Quality Education in a Distance

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020, mass gatherings have been prohibited. So in person classes have been put on a hold to ensure the safety of the learners, teachers, and staff. This lead to the school year 2019-2020 ending abruptly, meaning most if not all schools got to have their finals or year-end celebrations such as recognition programs and graduations. Despite the deadly virus, our government needed to find a way to continue learning while still ensuring the students’ safety, so they came up with distance learning. Thus, a new school year with a new mode of learning has begun.

Distance learning is a mode of education where the students learn in their homes instead of going to in person school. There are three types of distance learning, modular distance learning (MDL), online distance learning (ODL), and TV/Radio-based instruction. The school I’m learning in specifically chose blended learning, where both modular and online learning are done. How it works is that every week there is a set of modules given to the students for them to answer, and sometimes teachers will conduct an online meeting through google meet or zoom. Some students don’t have the necessary gadgets or internet to keep up with this mode of learning so it has its flaws. Another flaw is that the students can have a hard time understanding their lessons because of the lack of guidance from their teachers. There can also be distractions in their homes such as noisy environments, household chores, and abusive family members. Opinions on distance learning tend to be mixed, some students will say it is more of their liking, but some want to go back to face-to-face. In my personal experience, distance learning has been difficult, I tend to be more stressed because I have more responsibilities now compared to the previous school years. With that said, I can say that our government should work on improving our experience with education this pandemic because it really is difficult to have quality education with distance.

Even if distance learning can be a struggle, we should still be grateful that we have a way to continue with our education despite the pandemic. It definitely doesn’t feel the same way as before but we can still make memories and gain knowledge, it is up to you on how you spend your time. To ensure that we can go back to face to face classes sooner, we as a community should really respect the quarantine guidelines and protocols. If we Filipinos can empathize with those who are struggling this pandemic, we can go back to the way the world was before.

  1. I learned a lot from this blog. I also think that our government should find a way to improve the state of distance learning. As a student, we can only handle so much. Ever since distance learning was introduced, responsibilities kept on piling up. Our stress just kept on increasing instead of decreasing. Nevertheless, this blog is very well-made and it's very informational. Keep it up!

  2. I truly agree on the things that you said. The pandemic really affected our learning styles, but despite of it, we still managed to stand on this and had a way to continue learning amidst the pandemic. Anyways, I appreciate your work, thank you! Keep it up!
