Eighty Years of Valor

The Day of Valor or "Araw ng Kagitingan" is anually celebrated by Filipinos nationwide on April 9. The Philippines was involved in World War II from December 8, 1941, to September 2, 1945. In these roughly four years of fierce war, Bataan was the nation's center of defense. The 9th of April, 1942, was the day Bataan fell. Every year we commemorate the bravery and heroism of the Filipinos who fought for our freedom and national pride. This year 2022 will mark the 80th Araw ng Kagitingan.

The events leading up to the fall were catastrophic. Many soldiers, leaders, frontliners, and ordinary citizens were lost to the Japanese troops and their brutal attacks. After three months and two days of blood-filled battles of the 76,000 Filipino and American troops against the Japanese, General Edward P. King Jr. officially surrendered. The famous words "Bataan has fallen," were broadcast on the radio "Voice of Freedom" by Third Lieutenant Normando Ildefonso Reyes. Even after surrendering, soldiers were forced to march from Mariveles to Capas. During the march, approximately 10,00 men died. The brave Filipino soldiers that fought alongside Americans were mostly reservists. From students to farmers, these Filipino men were only trained for a few months to combat against veteran Japanese troops. Though we haven't won against the Japanese, it is still admirable that our soldiers lasted for that long, and that in itself is a victory.
The purpose of Araw ng Kagitingan is not to celebrate the fall of Bataan. The day is also a time to commemorate Bataan and the courageous soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. By recognizing their sacrifices, we raise awareness and appreciation for our history and ancestors. This Araw ng Kagitingan, we should take time to respect our leaders and be grateful for our freedom. So just like the soldiers who fought before us, we should love our country even in the simplest of ways.

  1. I really can't imagine how painful it was during the battle of Bataan. Lots of sacrifices were made by our late soldiers and I am grateful they did their best in fighting for our country. I agree that we should raise awareness about their sacrifices and give them appreciation from the bottom of our hearts. Keep up the good work!
