Social Media: The Broadcast of The Masses
In the new age of technology, people usually turn to social media to share, explore, create, and appreciate certain content that satisfies any and every interest. It is also a common medium for people and news sources to share essential information, including weather updates, COVID cases, upcoming events, and other beneficial facts. So, we can say that social media can play a vital role in situations where information needs to be broadcasted as soon as possible and can reach the masses. In times of need, social media can help families, workers, and just anyone.
To identify the true advantage of social media in times of calamities, we should go back to when it wasn't the first choice when spreading information. Before the rise of social media to fame around the early 2000s, citizens relied on traditional media, such as television or radio broadcasts, for news updates. These methods of sharing news can have their disadvantages, particularly when in moments of calamities. For instance, television requires electricity and time to prepare and broadcast. So in a disaster such as a typhoon where electricity isn't available, and people need constant and immediate updates, television isn't the best option.
As for radio broadcast, though it doesn't require electricity, it still requires time and the device itself. Aside from TV and radio, newspapers or prints were also used to spread news, but of course, it takes time and isn't very reliable as it requires labor to distribute it. So with the advancement of technology and methods, people created social media. Now, news outlets, government officials, and even citizens can spread the word with just a social media platform and a single click. Because of social media, a post can easily be shared by the masses, meaning victims of calamities can ask for help from anyone and everywhere. Since it is online, citizens will receive constant and immediate updates and don't need electricity to access posts. Just a device and a connection will do. To add, it allows users to communicate through calls and SMS without having to wait ages for a reply. Lastly, social media is a medium for all types of media and news. It supports video, image, and audio.
In conclusion, social media is much more than just sharing your interests, talents, and life online. It plays a vital role for someone in need. It can save lives by conveying important information and updates. A citizen in need can acquire updates on the safety of their area, the weather conditions, know when and where to evacuate, and even call for help if necessary. All of these are possible because of the innovation of social media and the ways people use it.
