Uno Filipino

Since the beginning of the pandemic last 2020, life has been different for everyone in the world. The Filipinos, especially those who are less fortunate have suffered from COVID-19. From the lost jobs, lost loved ones, closed businesses, gatherings prohibited, and schools put on pause, the pandemic has really impacted our country for the worst. Even if it is called the “new normal”, it will never feel natural to live in a Philippines where you can’t go out and eat with your friends, go to school, or even celebrate Noche Buena with your loved ones. It really is a shame that we haven’t defeated it yet but, together, we will find a way.

When we talk about the resiliency in the Philippines in relation to the pandemic, I can say it needs some work. Our government has implemented various levels of quarantine and different protocols, but a year has already passed by since the beginning of the pandemic and the only real progress we’ve had is having 22.4% of the population vaccinated and approved limited face to face classes. While other countries are already mask-less, have face-to-face classes, and have a mostly vaccinated population, we Filipinos are still required to wear face shields in public places and need to have quarantine passes when going out. In the province I live in, Ilocos Sur, is currently under Enhanced Community Quarantine, which means that “there is a restriction of movement of people unless is it out of necessity such as buying food.” This means that there is no sign of improvement when it comes to the actual cases. I can say that even if we are under ECQ, some disobedient people still go out of their house for insignificant reasons such as attending mass gatherings like parties, not thinking about the possible consequences of their actions. What I am trying to say is that, even if our government implements various protocols and quarantine guidelines, we can only defeat COVID if we as a whole follow those protocols, be careful, and be considerate of others.

To achieve a more resilient Philippines, we need first learn about unity, discipline, and empathy. If we are united, disciplined and learn how to understand and share feelings with each other, we can recover from anything bad that comes our way so we don’t have to suffer as much as we do now. Without those three things, we as a country will never improve and will end up in an endless cycle of hardships. So if we want to overcome the pandemic, we need to work as a whole instead of only thinking about ourselves, in that way we can finally call ourselves a Covid-free country. It is only together, that we can be better.
