MINING: SMASH OR PASS?

Mining, yes, just like the popular video game "Minecraft," involves people extracting or collecting materials such as metals and minerals from the ground. These materials are then used for items such as jewelry, pots and pans, electrical wires, and other valuable objects humans use. The practice of mining dates as far as 3000 BCE. It was slow and mainly done to make weapons for hunting, but now that technology has advanced, the things we can do are virtually unlimited. And of course, time doesn't only come with development but also destruction.
Mining benefits us, humans, in numerous ways. One of them is by supplying valuable metals, minerals, and rocks. We may not notice it, but a lot of the objects we see around our homes are products of mining. Aside from that, it provides people with employment opportunities. It is convenient for the poor who don't have enough money for college as the job doesn't require a college diploma. Lastly, it benefits our economy. If our country is rich in natural resources such as gold or iron, investors and big companies will take interest in our country and boost the economy. This boost in the economy will ultimately benefit our citizens and society. Everything comes with consequences, specifically if not done properly. If safety precautions are not observed, the workers will be put at risk of injury. If there is an excessive amount of mining, habitats can be destroyed, natural resources can deplete, and disasters such as landslides are more likely to occur. Lastly, if a mine is not rehabilitated, it can release some harmful chemicals into the environment which in turn leads to water, soil, and air pollution.
Now, do I think mining should be put to an end? Of course not. The mining industry is one of the most important sectors of our community as it provides us with many necessities and benefits. But as a student and a citizen of the country, I should be an advocate for change. Mining has many disadvantages, but these can be avoided if the process is done ethically and correctly. The government should pay more attention to the country's mines and enforce stricter rules on mining companies to ensure that the citizens and ecosystems don't perish in return for their selfish desires.
